ABOUT
Weaver and textile designer
b. 1990, Ångermanland
Interested in textile architecture and yarn architecture, traditional crafts and contemporary textile techniques, Mirjam Hemström is a hand- and industrial weaver based in Gothenburg, Sweden. With a special interest in perception, space as a subjective experience, a physical memory and an on-going process in human mind, the focus of work often revolves around designing sensations and emotions between the real and the fictitious - mute conversations through materiality and interspace.
Hemström holds a Master degree of Fine Arts in Textile Design from The Swedish School of Textiles (2020), has interned at Studio Akane Moriyama (2016-2017) and in 2016, established the weave group Studio Supersju. In 2018, the group received the Cathrine von Hauswolff Grant for Design Development, and in 2020, won the textile category of the Design S award.
The bachelor degree work Woven Air, Cubic Colorized from 2016, explored three dimensional patterns and color on monofilament multi layer cloths. Further, the master degree project The Metamorphosis of Weaving (2020), researched macro and micro spatial features in pattern and form through rope making and dimensional hand weaving.
Since graduating from The Swedish School of Textiles, Hemström works with exhibitions, sells her art works, works on commisions and as a guest lecturer as well as writes on the theme of textile perception.
